Asbestos in Deshler Band Room

The band room at Deshler High School has been closed until further notice. A called meeting of band parents was held on Thursday afternoon at which attendees felt little was explained. Those familiar with the situation told PNS that asbestos had been found in the band director's office during a renovation begun by director Craig Weeks.

According to several parents, Weeks has been suspended pending an employment hearing. The Deshler High principal and Tuscumbia superintendent of education refused to discuss Weeks' status or the reasons for his suspension/termination at the Thursday meeting or to connect the two events.

From Weeks' bio: Craig Weeks is in his 8th year as Band Director at Deshler High School and in his 14th year of teaching.  He is a current resident of Tuscumbia, AL.  He grew up in Winfield, AL where he attended Winfield City High School where he graduated in 1991.  He and his wife Tanya have two sons, Nicholas and Hunter.  Mr. Weeks also teaches Band and Music Appreciation at Deshler Middle School.

PNS will update this story when more information is available.
